Route des Grandes Alpes – 2018

Join us on this incredible cycle ride through the Alps to the Med, peddling from Lac Leman (Geneva) to Menton, just up the road from Nice.

Breathtaking scenery and some of the most iconic cols in the French Alps. In all 16 big cols are crossed on this 430 mile (700km) journey.

For 2018 I am offering 8 day trips on the Route des Grandes Alpes. Expect 2 big climbs between 70 and 100km riden per day. There should be plenty of time to admire the views, take a few snaps and stop for the obligatory coffee and cake.

We begin the trip from the shores of Lac Leman in Thonon les Bains and start with the relatively gentle Col des Gets. The going then gets tough with the Col de la Colombiere (arguably the hardest col of the trip). The double header of the Cols des Aravis and des Saises gives us a stunning first view of Mont Blanc. The Cormet de Roselend is mind blowingly stunning and leads to Bourg Saint Maurice, the start of the longest single climb of the trip, the mighty Col de l’Iseran. This is followed by an equally long descent to the start of the Col du Telegraphe which descends into Valloire and the start of the col that gets everybody’s heart racing, the Col du Galibier. An extra col, the Col du Lauteret, is bagged with no effort at all – it’s on the descent from the Galibier. Another long run down in to Briancon leads to the start of the Col d’Izoard with its magnificent and moonlike Casse Desert scenery. From Guillestre we begin the climb of the Col de Vars and thence to Jausiers. From here we head up the huge Col de la Bonnette (often cited as the highest driveable road in Europe) or the Col de la Cayolle depending on the exact itinerary.  We’re now swooping through the Maritime Alps and cross the Cols St Martin, Turini (that of night time rally fame) and Castillon before heading downhill to the Mediterranean at Menton and a paddle in the sea. On the final Sunday there may be the option of riding from Menton to Nice, finishing along the Promenade des Anglais – this will depend on flight times chosen on the Sunday.

NEW FOR 2018 – for those that might like a much more leisurely trip or first time in the Alps, 2 week trips available, 1 big col per day. Please enquire about this option.
